All you need to know about the RCR squad ahead of the 2018 IPL season
Royal Challengers Bangalore look formidable on all fronts with skipper Virat Kohli ready to lead the charge. They possess a hefty batting unit backed by an equally good pace and spin attack. The likes of Chris Woakes, Colin de Grandhomme, Pawan Negi and Washington Sundar make them a title challenging side.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have struggled in the previous seasons with the lack of depth in their seam bowling department. The side that has never won the IPL title in 10 seasons, but have invested faith in pace bowlers like Tim Southee, Nathan Coulter-Nile (8 matches, 15 wickets in IPL 2017), Chris Woakes (91 runs and 8 wickets in 8 T20Is), Umesh Yadav (94 wickets in 91 IPL matches) and Mohammed Siraj (10 wickets in 6 IPL matches).
The top order has always been RCB’s strength and the fact will continue to remain with Virat, De Villiers, McCullum, de Kock, Vohra/Mandeep Singh and Sarfaraz Khan forming a dashing unit. KL Rahul’s absence will be nullified by the likes of Sarfaraz and Vohra who would like to grab the opportunity of playing under the Indian captain with both hands and prove their contention for a team India cal.
Squad Analysis for RCB
Batting : Like every season, the strength of Royal Challengers Bangalore lies in their batting line-up. Apart from Virat Kohli, who is currently the No.3 batsman in T20I according to ICC rankings and the extremely dangerous AB de Villiers, RCB also bought Brendon McCullum for Rs 3.6 crore along to boost its side already dangerous batting line-up. In the absence of KL Rahul, who used to open the innings with skipper Kohli in the previous few editions, McCullum can provide the perfect option to open the innings. He can score at a fast pace and relieve pressure on Kohli to take the innings forward.
All-Rounders : Likes of Colin de Grandhomme, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes will be trying to handle the middle order with the batting and bowling capabilities.
Bowlers : Bowling has never been quite the department for RCB since the start, but this year the would be happy to see the pace attack they have bought in the auction. Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav and Nathan Coulter-Nile will help the side this year. Yazuvendra Chahal, who was retained by the team for a whopping Rs 6 crore would be leading the spin attack with two young all-round prospects Pawan Negi and Washington Sundar, who have both impressed in their previous stints with Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Super Giants.
The RCB play their first match against the Kolkata Knight Riders on April 8th 2018 at the iconic Eden Gardens.
Daniel Vettori will be coaching Royal Challengers Bangalore this year.
